Well, my little boy turned 5 yesterday. Guess where he had his birthday party? I'll give you a hint...
That's right, the Leveda Brown Environmental Park and Transfer Station. Home of The Waste Watchers. This is where the garbage trucks bring the waste and recycling to be transferred to semi's bound for the landfill (waste) or sorted and baled (recycling). We also got to tour the grounds and see where they take the old tires, branches, appliances, and hazardous waste. It was really a lot of fun, for both the children and the adults.
They started with an extremely dated (like, 1985) piece of video propaganda (is it propaganda if you agree with it?) about the 4 R's (reduce, reuse, recycle, rethink). Henry is riveted. He even shushed people.
Here we are touring the hazardous waste collection center. He is showing them some computer innards. Hey people, electronics are 100% recyclable, so don't throw that old broken phone in the trash. If you live here in Alachua County, bring it out to the hazardous materials collection center!

After the tour and the visit from The WW, we had cupcakes and opened gifts. They do tours out there for anyone if you are interested. It was great, and it was free! A special thanks to Aunt Stephie, who gave me the idea. I am hoping to get some video uploaded soon.

that was perfect! i'm sure henry loved it! i remember when my brother was turning 4 my mom took him to the place where the either make or retire firetrucks.. he wanted to be a fireman.
Great idea! My nephew who is 5 in August insists that my sister take him to an orange juice factory. I think he might have been watching "How its made" and drinking orange juice at the same time.

That's awesome. I remember two years ago when we stayed with you and Henry's highlight of the day was watching the garbage truck come down the street. Sounds like he's still a fan...do we have a future garbage man...I mean waste management engineer???
WOW, WOW, and triple WOW!!! Aly, will you be my personal kids' birthday party consultant?!? My kids will soon be old enough to actually REMEMBER their birthdays...and YOU ROCK!
Really, a birthday party at the waste collection center? Really? That is amazing. Y'all are too cool. Will you please plan my kids' birthday parties? By the way, I did a project on "waste" for a class called "Visual Anthropology" that I took my senior year to get Gordon Rule credits and we toured that facility and used images of it for most of our project. Gotta loves getting all you Gordon Rule credits taken care of for having your teammates make a conceptual web site about trash. Love y'all, love U.F., love it.
